Alton 2 - 1 Fareham Town

Posted: 05.02.20

Russell Cotes Cup Quarter Final

Two first half goals from George Bowerman gave Alton the victory that saw them progress to the semi finals of the Hampshire FA Russell Cotes Cup against their visitors from the Wessex premier division.

It was easy to see who were the higher placed team, but for all their possession Fareham were unable to make it tell.

Alton took the lead in the sixth minute as Matt Benham robbed a Fareham defender on the edge of the box, drove towards the bye line and pulled the ball back for a simple tap in by Bowerman to give Alton the lead.

It was a lead that was to last less than a minute as Alton gave away a soft free kick and this allowed Woods to head the equaliser.

With both teams buoyed by scoring the game became end to end with Fareham creating the better chances, but unable to turn possession into goals. It wasn't all one way traffic but again Alton were unable to press Fareham keeper McCarthy into a save.

Alton regained the lead as they broke up a Fareham free kick and Benham found Steve Black who took a couple of touches and his shot was spilled by McCarthy into the path of Bowerman, who although off balance found the back of the net.

Liam Knight was fouled which allowed Benham to test McCarthy but he was able to tip over his own bar.

Alton were now on top and should have had a penalty when McCarthy fouled Sanderson as they both went for a high ball. Sanderson got their first and headed slightly wide as McCarthy took him out, to the surprise of players on both sides the referee awarded a goal kick.

The second half followed the pattern of the first with Fareham having lots of possession without creating any real chances.

Alton also had chances Oli Graham shot into the side netting from a corner, before Bowerman shot straight at the keeper.

Fareham had a great chance to equalise as Simm worked some space but saw his shot cannon back off the bar, and with no Fareham player near Alton managed to clear.

A fine cross field ball by substitute Hitch found Black, but his shot was blocked. Courtnage made another save, before Fareham saw themselves reduced to ten men.

Courtnage punched clear a corner which found Benham, as he drove forward he was unceremoniously dumped to the ground by Fareham captain Messenbird, who left the referee no option but to send him off.

So it was Alton who progressed to the semi final having beaten a team from the level above for the third time this season. Next up a trip to Fawley on Saturday in the Wessex League division one.
