Alton 2 - 1 Verwood Town

Posted: 29.12.19

Alton continued on their winning sequence of games with victory against Verwood on Saturday as two goals from Stuart Green was enough to secure all three points.

With injuries to Sanderson, Fowler and Graham, manager Kev Adair shuffled his pack with recalls for Matt Graham and Luke Perkins.

It was Perkins who was first in action as he was fouled and Matt Benham's free kick was just over. A good run by Perkins resulted in an Alton corner that came to nothing.

Alton defended well as Verwood attacked down their right and the danger was cleared. Phil Moore had to be alert to head away for a Verwood corner, that Matt Graham headed clear.

Liam Knight produced a fine cross but Kelly headed clear under pressure from Bowerman. Courtnage collected a cross, before a free kick by Moore allowed Knight to produce a fine header at the far post, but it was blocked for a corner.

Another Knight cross allowed Perkins to get in front of his man, but his header was just wide.

The goal that Alton were threatening finally came. Alton won a corner and Stuart Green was unmarked at the far post to head home his first goal of the season.

The game became a bit stop start before the break, with both sides huffing & puffing and not really producing any clear cut chances.

Matt Graham had a shot from distance saved, before Courtnage was forced to save from Butler. Steve Black had a shot that was sliced clear for a corner by Watkins, Alton couldn't make it pay though.

Liam Knight and Luke Perkins combined to give Perkins a chance to increase Alton's lead, Perkins went round the keeper on the edge of the penalty area, and although he stumbled he still managed to get his shot away towards the goal, where Danvers managed to get back and block Perkins goal bound effort and the ball bounced into the grateful arms of goalkeeper Mino.

Alton did double the lead a few minutes later as Grahams cross into the box was met by the head of Stuart Green who got in front of the keeper to head into the open goal.

Benham had a shot that Mino saved, before Vint of Verwood shot over when well placed. Jamie Phillips was fouled on the edge of the Verwood penalty area, but the free kick was high and wide.

Courtnage was forced to save from Butler again, before Verwood pulled a goal back. Alton gave the ball away in the middle of the park and Vint was played in and he beat Courtnage to give Verwood hope, with fifteen minutes left.

Alton forced four straight corners, but were unable to make anything from them as they finished the game on the front foot.
