Alton 1 - 3 East Cowes Vics

Posted: 21.10.19

Alton put in their worst performance of the season on Saturday as they lost to Vics, who recorded their first win of the season.

Vics took advantage of Alton's poor run of form which has seen them lose their last three games and slide down the table from third to seventh.

Once again poor finishing didn't help Alton's cause. Manager Kevin Adair made five changes to the side that lost against Andover New Street.

Alton started brightly and Sanderson and Bowerman combined but Steinborn-Busse in the Vics goal was alert, to thwart the danger.

Matt Benham's cross was collected, before Sanderson and Bowerman combined to set up Fowler, but he scuffed his shot.

Vics had a goal disallowed for offside, before rather against the run of play they took the lead, winger Kirby got down to the bye line and his pull back was thumped home by Chapman.

Worst was to follow for Alton as they immediately conceded a second, this time Chapman was the provider as his driven cross was tapped home by Butcher who got in front of Phillips three yards out. Oh how Alton's forwards must dream of such crosses.

Sanderson had a header saved, before Vics's Gregory was sin binned, but although they huffed and puffed Alton were unable to take advantage.

Fowler had a shot hit the post and Phil Moore put a free header wide from a corner.

With manager Adair's half time team talk ringing in their ears, the last thing Alton wanted to do was concede again, but concede they did almost immediately as an attack was broken up and with the defence all over the place Butcher was able to race through and give Courtnage no chance, and give Vics a three nil lead.

With Vics happy with their lot, they were happy to sit back and get men behind the ball and invite Alton to break them down, unfortunalty, all too often the final ball was not good enough or too many touches were taken and the chance lost.

Alton had to thank Courtnage as Butcher had a chance for his hat-trick as once again he broke through a very static defence, but this time Courtnage stayed big and saved.

With fifteen minutes left Alton got a goal back as substitute Matt Grindel, shot across Steinborn-Busse into the far corner. It was a goal they gave Alton hope. They laid siege to the Vics goal, but try as they may they could not find a way passed the keeper.

This is a game that Alton will look back on and think they could and should of done better, often they were their own worst enemy, by moving the ball too slowly and delivering either poor crosses, or crosses straight at the keeper.

With no midweek game they can turn their attentions to a visit to Romsey Town on Saturday.
