Alton 2 - 3 Andover New Street
Posted: 12.10.19Alton slipped to their second defeat in four days as they succumbed to New Street on Saturday, and like the game at Whitchurch in the week, it was the inability to take their chances when on top, that cost them most.
Photos by Howard GadsbyAgain like midweek, conceding an early goal doesn't help. New Street went ahead on two minutes, a ball into the Alton box was missed by the defence and Hooper with his back to goal and eight yards out, controlled the ball and back heeled it into the net with Courtnage who was expecting the ball to be laid back completely caught out.
Buoyed by the early goal New Street went forward with purpose and Sweeney shot wide from the edge of the box.
Matt Benham shot wide for Alton, before the equaliser arrived, George Bowerman chased a through ball into the box, and was unceremoniously dumped to the ground by New Street keeper Smith. Phil Moore stepped up and although the keeper went the right way the penalty was too strong and Alton drew level.
The equaliser spurred Alton forward and perhaps should have had another penalty as Oli Graham was fouled in the penalty area, but the referee waved play on, with most in the ground thinking that it was more a penalty than the one given.
Alton's mood was not helped as New Street regained the lead as Sweeney headed home unchallenged from a corner a few minutes later. Worst was to come as a few minutes later New Street scored their third, as Spencer shot home.
Courtnage had only half cleared a through ball, which went straight to Spencer twenty five yards from goal and with Courtnage out of position, shot home.
Alton should have pulled a goal back, as Benham's free kick was met by Stu Green but with the goal at his mercy headed wide.
Alton were enjoying lots of possession as New Street were pushed back, Graham headed wide, before Alton were nearly caught out by a breakaway, but Hopper under pressure from Liam Knight pulled his shot wide.
The second half was end to end, with half chances at both ends, Perkins shot over and Green headed wide again, before Alton got their second goal, Bowerman got passed his defender and as he was running out of pitch managed to squeeze his shot passed Smith at the near post.
Sensing at least a draw Alton laid siege to the New Street goal, who stood firm using all sorts of means some fair and some not so fair.
The goal would just not come for Alton and were left frustrated by another defeat.
They will look to put that right as they entertain second bottom East Cowes next weekend.
