Alton 3 - 2 New Milton Town

Posted: 08.10.19

This game exploded into life in the last quarter as New Milton belied ther lowly league position to take Alton to the wire in a good encounter at the Enclosure.

The first half was a bit of a tame affair as neither side were able to create a really good scoring chance , New Milton were well in the game and looked a threat down both flanks keeping both Alton full backs on their toes. The only goal of the first half came on the half hour , Olly Graham ghosted in at the far post to hammer the ball into the roof of the net following good work from George Bowerman down the left hand side of the penalty area. New Milton would have been disapointed to be trailing at the break.

The second half started in the same manner , Alton's high tempo game on Tuesday against Hythe & Dibden might well have been a factor as they looked a liitle lethargic around the pitch . Little did the large crowd know what awaited them in the last 20 minutes. New Milton equalised with about twenty minutes to go , an aimless lofted ball into the box allowed one of the attackers in at the back post to head home . With 7 minutes to go New Milton capatilised on an error on the half way line , Alton gave the ball away unnecessarily and a very alert midfielder looked up an saw the opportunity to strike the ball from distance and lift the ball over the keeper and into the net , to the joy of the travelling contingent.

Two substitutions that manager Kev Adair had made a little earlier swung the game back to Alton's advantage , Matt Benham's incisive throughball split the defence allowing Luke Perkins to stride through and clip the ball into the net over the advanvancing keeper 2-2. Alton now had the wind in their sails and with a minute or 2 remaining Benham broke down the right and lifted a cross to the back post, Matt Graham had timed his run into the box perfectly his first touch set him up nicely and he crashed an unstopable shot into the top right hand corner of the net leaving the away keeper flatfooted.

The result was a little harsh on the away side but the spirit of Alton to recover the situation augers well for the games ahead.
