East Cowes Vics 2 - 5 Alton

Posted: 09.09.19

Alton travelled to the island on Saturday and came away with a league victory for the first time in a few years.

In truth Alton dominated most of the game and could and should have made the score line more emphatic.

With changes from the last game due to the logistics it was Alton who started on the front foot, as George Bowerman tested the keeper after just thirty seven seconds.

Alex Hooker's header from a corner was saved, before good work in the midfield by Jack Fowler and Liam Knight, set up a shooting chance for Bowerman, but his shot was saved by Steinborne-Busse in the Vics goal.

For all Alton's pressure it was Vics who went ahead, Alton half cleared a free kick, the ball was moved out to Alton's right and the cross was tapped home by Jimmi Burton to open the scoring.

This set back which in the past would have seen the side fall apart just galvanised the team, Fowler and Bowerman combined for Oli Graham to have a shot saved, Bowerman had a cross, before Alton equalised.

Matt Graham broke up a Vics attack, then good work involving Richie Hunter and Liam Knight found the ball at Oli Grahams feet 20 yards from goal, with the Vics defence allowing him time to control and look up, his left foot shot found the bottom corner of the net with Steinborne-Busse floundering.

Vics didn't learn their lesson because three minute later almost an identical shot gave Alton the lead, this time the move was down Alton's right, with Hunter and Bowerman involved, again the ball found Oli Graham 20 yards out and this time his shot found the inside of the side netting.

The second goal seemed to deflate Vics and chances aplenty fell Alton's way, Bowerman had a shot blocked an Alton corner was headed clear, from another corner Oli Grahams header was just the wrong side of the post.

The second half started as the first ended with Alton in the ascendancy, and exquisite through ball by Graham was just to string for Hunter, who was unable to get enough power on his shot and the keeper saved.

Jack Fowler who gave his defender a torrid time all afternoon had a cross, before he scored Alton's third as he raced onto a through ball and as Steinborne-Busse came out he slid it past him for Alton's third.

Justin Courtnage was called into a rare piece of action as from a Vics free kick he saved the header from Gregory. With Vics relying on the long ball, Gill and Hooker came under a bit of a bombardment but stood firm.

Vic's Ahmed managed to get through on goal, but Jamie Phillips and Courtnage combined to snuff out the chance. With Oli Graham sniffing a hat-trick he had a shot blocked.

Hooker blocked a Vics shot. With Vics defending becoming more desperate Fowler was fouled and Matt Benham's free kick was somehow kept out at the far post with Oli Graham waiting to pounce.

The forth goal finally came, Vics had a corner that Alton cleared, Phillis chased the ball down the wing laid inside to Fowler, who in turn laid the ball into the path of Bowerman, whose shot gave the keeper no chance.

With the game won, manager Kev Adair introduced all his subs and Harry Rolfe found Benham, but his shot came back off the post.

Alton were guilty of ball watching as a free header from a corner by Burton reduced the arrears.

Courtnage saved from Ahmed, before Alton scored their fifth and finally put the game to bed.

A ball into the box was handled by Gregory, and skipper Matt Graham stepped up to give the keeper no chance.

So ended a satisfactory day out, where so often before we have fell to the travel time and player availability.
