Alton 2 - 1 Andover New Street

Posted: 02.09.19

Alton moved into the second qualifying round of the FA Vase on Saturday with a much improved performance, and could even afford a missed penalty.

Alton welcomed back Jamie Phillips and Scott Sanderson, and it was Sanderson who was first in action as he was fouled, and from Matt Grahams free kick he headed wide.

New Street wasted a free kick of their own, before good work by Matt Benham, George Bowerman and Oli Graham, found Stuart Green with space but he shot wide.

Alton were nearly caught out by their nemesis the ball over the top, Courtnage came out of his area to head clear, but misjudged the bounce and the ball went behind him towards Alton's goal, with Hooker challenging New Streets Silver, Courtnage got back to save his blushes and dive on the loose ball.

Sanderson had a shot saved, while at the other end Sweeney had a free header that he put wide.

Alton had a great chance to go ahead as Bowerman was pulled back in the area, giving the referee no option but to point to the spot, however Bowerman's spot kick was saved by Wing in the New Street goal.

The goal Alton had been threatening came soon after as good work by Graham, Sanderson and Benham, found Richie Hunter and his in swinging cross was headed home by Bowerman to give Alton the lead.

The goal galvanised New Street and Courtnage had to save from Silver, before New Street drew level, Alton lost the ball in midfield, Hooker couldn't recover from the midfield error and Luke Hooper ran through on goal and gave Courtnage no chance as he slid the ball home.

With New Street now in the ascendancy they lost their way as Silver was sent to the sin bin, which helped Alton get back into the game.

Courtnage saved at the feet of Beavis, while at the other end Wing again denied Bowerman and Benham shot wide.

Alton laid siege to the New Street goal as the second half started, Bowerman again forced Wing to save, before the same player chipped just over.

Stu Green tried his luck from twenty five yards, but again was off target, Sanderson and Bowerman combined , but again the shot was high.

With those watching thinking was it going to be one of those days Alton regained the lead. Jamie Phillips corner was punched clear by Wing, the ball fell kindly to Sanderson on the edge of the area and his first time shot flew into the corner of the net.

New Street's Sweeney shot over, Hunter had a shot blocked for a corner, substitute Liam Knight shot into the side netting, before once again, Bowerman was pulled back in the area as he turned the centre half, only this time the referee waved away the penalty appeals.

Benham got in down the right, his cross found, Bowerman who with the keeper challenging him laid the ball off to Hunter, his goal bound shot looked destined for goal number three, until somehow Wing got back to save.

The game ended with New Streets Silver shooting wide after again Alton gave the ball away in midfield.

And so it is Alton that go through to the next round, and will welcome Westbury United to The Enclosure in a fortnight.

Next up for Alton is a trip to the Island to play East Cowes Vics on Saturday.
