AFC Stoneham 8 - 0 Alton

Posted: 28.08.19

Alton crashed out of the league cup on Tuesday night against premier division AFC Stoneham, with player unavailability forcing manager Kev Adair's hand the team showed four changes to Saturday's team.

It was Stoneham who started brightest and their fast one touch football and movement caused Alton problems all night.

Alton cleared two crosses in the first minute, before not for the first time this season, Alton fell behind to an early goal, Laptas looking suspiciously offside, got down the wing Courtnage parried his shot which fell to Jimenez who fired home.

Liam Knight had a cross collected by the Stoneham keeper and then a free kick was wasted following a foul on Stuart Green, before Stoneham increased their lead, once again a ball over the top caught Alton out and Hogan rifled home from the edge of the box.

Worst was to follow as two goals in as many minutes put the game well and truly beyond Alton's grasp.

Alton had a couple of chances but without really troubling Parker-Trott in the Stoneham goal, before a free header gave Stoneham a five nil interval lead.

The second half started as the first ended and from a cross into the six yard box Stoneham scored again.

A Matt Graham free kick was headed over, from a rare Alton free kick, before once again the long ball did for Alton as Jimenez chased and controlled and then from a tight angle, shot across Courtnage for number seven.

Oli Graham forced the Stoneham keeper to save, before substitute Sean Evans had a shot that the keeper theatrically saved for the cameras!. Alton then recorded their first Sin Bin of the season as Ali Gill, was given a ten minute rest for something he said to the referee.

Alton held out until the last three minutes when Sutherden, completed Alton's misery with number eight. Although this looks like a bad defeat in the grand scheme of things this was never a cup Alton were going to win, and losing this game saves a 140 mile midweek round trip in the next round, and the tea and cake served at half time was excellent.

Alton must now dust them selves down and prepare for the FA Vase game on Saturday with Andover New Street the visitors to The Enclosure.
