Downton 4 - 2 Alton

Posted: 11.08.19

Alton travelled to Downton on Saturday buoyed by their victory the week before, but were undone by some poor defending and missed chances.

Alton could have taken the lead on 15 seconds but Bowerman's shot was saved by Osei in the Downton goal. However the first goal came in the second minute as the Downton full back Larbi got down the bye line and pulled the ball back to give Robbie Owen the simplest of tap ins.

The wings were giving Downton a lot of joy as the left back Howe crossed, but fortunately for Alton there was no one in the box from Downton.

With Downton in the ascendancy, the second goal wasn't long coming, Alton lost the ball in midfield and Romero played a ball through the Alton defence and Owen ran onto it, went past Courtnage to double the lead.

With Alton supporters fearing the worst, there was an immediate reply as Sanderson's shot was parried and Bowerman shot home to reduce the deficit.

The game became more open with both sides creating chances, Downton's best attacking was coming down both wing where Black and Gill were given a torrid time with both Downton full backs overlapping at will.

Both Prentice and Rendell for Downton shot over, before Alton had a period of sustained pressure as first Hitch had a free kick saved, before Bowerman's shot was saved and then he had a shot deflected for a corner.

The second half started and there was no let up for Alton as Downton attacked at pace down the wings, but all to often the final ball was wayward. Green had a shot for Alton, before they were nearly caught out from their own corner, Downton cleared and Moseley broke away, but when it looked easier to hit the target he somehow managed to shot over.

The forth goal and Alton's equaliser finally came, Bowerman and Oli Graham combined, to put Chris Horton through and he beat the keeper at the far post for his first senior goal in only his second appearance.

Alton now had their tails up and took the game to Downton, Graham had a shot deflected for a corner, before two goals in as many minutes sealed the game for Downton, once again the got in down the wing and with his back to goal Prentice was allowed to turn and shoot and regain the lead for the home side.

Worst was to come as Black conceded a penalty two minutes later which Moseley converted. From that moment on Downton managed the game out as Alton relied on route one which they were unable to make headway with.

So a disappointing result and performance after last weeks win, they will look to go again this week with Petersfield at home on Tuesday before a trip to early pace makers Folland Sports on Friday.
