Totton & Eling 2 - 2 Alton

Posted: 17.04.19

Alton had to twice come from behind to secure a draw against bottom side Totton on Tuesday night.

This was a game that Totton needed to win to have any chance of not finishing bottom and therefore the game was very open.

The pitch was very bobbly and hard, but it was Alton buoyed by two wins on the bounce that started brightest Sanderson headed wide and Knight had a shot saved, before Petts had to be alert to save bravely at the feet of Hanlon after a one two on the edge of Alton's box. Sanderson should have given Alton the lead when from a long throw Bunyan flicked on and somehow Sanderson headed wide. It was a miss that Alton began to rue as Totton won the ball in midfield and with Gain and Mathews playing another one-two on the edge of the Alton box, Gain this time gave Petts no chance.

It was a lead that only lasted two minutes as a free kick from Petts was headed on by Bunyan to Adkins who found Sanderson, who made up for his early miss as he swept home the equaliser.

Both sides had chances before Totton regained the lead after Kanaah put Mathews through on goal and he restored Tottons lead. Again it was a lead that was short lived as a fine flowing move down the right involving Black and Sanderson, worked the ball to Chandler on the right wing, his cross was held up by Bunyan, who then laid the ball back to Liam Knight who controlled and shot into the far corner from twenty five yards to bring the game level just before the break.

The second half was a dour affair with an end of season feel about it with the pitch winning and chanced few and far between until the final minute when both sides had a chance to win the game.

Alton won a free kick wide on the right, Graham's cross found Bunyan whose header hit the post, he was first to the rebound, but somehow Jones in the Totton goal saved, the ball was then cleared and Totton broke two on two, Petts parried the first shot and with him struggling to get to the rebound Tottons sub Cordeddu somehow screwed his shot wide with the goal gaping.

So the game ended in a draw, which after the previous run Alton will take. Now two games over the Easter weekend will bring Alton's season to an end, as they travel to play Fawley on Saturday and then a trip to the island on Monday to play in what will be Newport(IoW)s last game at their current St Georges ground.
