Alton 3 - 1 Verwood Town

Posted: 15.04.19

Alton followed up last weeks much needed win with another in their final home game of this season.

With the season fast coming to a close you have been forgiven for thinking that this would have an end of season feel about the game. Far from it, the game was played in very good spirits by both teams who were both trying to win the game, and was refereed sensibly which made for an enjoyable spectacle for all present.

Buoyed by last weeks victory it was Alton who started brightest and Mark Taylor had a header saved from an early free kick, before Kieran Lenachan and Scott Sanderson combined, but Sanderson's shot was deflected for a corner, the corner came to nothing.

Matt Petts was called into action and produced a fine double save, first saving a shot from Vining and them saving the rebound from Nicholson. Lenachan's pace got him in behind the Verwood defence and from his cross Sanderson's header was saved by Thompson.

The game was end to end as both teams searched out the first goal, Nicholson had another shot that the Alton defence cleared, before a Verwood free kick was headed wide at the far post Cajic. Charlie Osborne had a shot saved, before good defending by Steve Black who got back behind Petts and headed Nicholson's lob off the line as the winger thought he had given Verwood the lead. It was a header that was to prove decisive as shortly after Alton took the lead. Gavin Muir got down the left wing and his pull back found Lenachan, who was given the time to turn and fire home for the first goal of the game.

Lenachan had another shot parried, before Nicholson who was a threat for Verwood all afternoon had a shot that hit the bar, the half ended with Lenachan's shot come cross hit the Verwood bar with the keeper beaten.

Alton immediately doubled their lead in the first minute of the second half. Lenachan and Black combined down the right wing, Lenachan's shot was blocked and came back to Black who crossed to find Sanderson at the far post who turned the ball home at the far post. Alton's tails were now up, Lenachan shot wide after being put through by Sanderson, Alton forced a corner and Muir and Jackson combined but the shot was saved.

Petts was called into action again as he saved from Nicholson, and the defence cleared the rebound. Black blocked a shot, before Sanderson turned and shot forcing Thompson to save. Verwood forced a free kick that Petts collected. Max Smith who was dominate in midfield all afternoon, tried his luck form long range, forcing Nicholson to back peddle and tip over the bar.

Verwood's efforts final got them back in the game as Jackson fouled Vining in the area, and Charlie Cajic gave Petts no chance from the spot. Manager Mark Corbett bought himself on as sub on what was also his last game at The Enclosure before at the season end he heads for California. Lenachan had a cross that was cleared, before Verwood who sensed a draw forced two corners in quick succession, the first was headed wide by Cajic and the second was also headed wide by Ben Kelly.

Alton's Max Smith got in behind the Verwood defence and his shot was parried by the keeper and there was no Alton forward on hand to tap into the empty net and Verwood cleared. Nicholson was unlucky not to equalise as his shot from out side the box hit the inside of the post and bounced into the grateful arms of Petts who was completely beaten from the original shot. Liam Knight got down the left and his cross found Corbett, whose shot was deflected for a corner, it was from this corner that Alton made the game safe, the corner went long and Lenachan headed the ball back across goal and their was Muir to screw his shot into the net off the post.

And so Alton's home games for this season came to an end, Manager Mark Corbett and the players where given a tremendous reception by most of the 120 spectators as they left the pitch. With three games left in eight days, they will be hoping to carry on with their improved form as the season draws to an close.
