Alton 1 - 4 US Portsmouth

Posted: 18.03.19

And so it continues, the poor run that started at the turn of the year as once again Alton slipped to defeat on Saturday.

The first half was a bit of a non event as both sides struggled with the swirling wind, which made ball retention difficult. Chances were few and far between with most efforts by both sides sailing either harmlessly wide or straight at the keepers. This all changed just before the break, Matt Petts was forced to save for a corner and as too often recently Alton switched off and allowed Harry Sergeant a free header to give US the lead.

Worst was to follow at the start of the second half as US with their tail up following the goal, started to control the game, whereas Alton were still struggling not only with the wind but with their confidence knocked as well.

US doubled their lead, Alton played a ball up front which Jackson failed to control on the half way line, the ball broke forward and US's Dec Seiden shot home form the edge of the box giving Petts no chance, worst was to follow as two soon became three as Laycock turned in a cross at the near post.

US put the game well out of Alton's reach when Josh Smith picked the ball up some thirty yards from goal and rifled the ball into the top corner for their forth goal.

Alton did pull a consolation goal back with fifteen minutes left, when Callum Burch received the ball on the right, beat his defender and sent a searing shot, past the keeper and into the net.

Although both sides huffed and puffed the wind really won the day which was summed up by a Matt Graham cross that wind assisted ended up twenty yards behind where he crossed from.

Alton will dust themselves down and hope for a change of fortune next Saturday as they head to Laverstock & Ford.
