East Cowes Vics 6 - 2 Alton

Posted: 18.02.19

Alton travelled to the island on Saturday hoping to put their poor run of form behind them. They came up against a Vics team full of confidence and on an unbeaten run the complete opposite to Alton's.

As expected Vics started brightest and Harry Birchnall saved from Ahmed, a Vics corner came to nothing before Alton took the lead from a corner of their own. Matt Graham's corner was headed back from beyond the far post by Max Adolphe and in the ensuing scramble the linesman flag to confirm the ball had crossed the line, the final touch being made by Matt Jackson.

The game started to ebb and flow, a Graham free kick found Matt Bunyan but hos header was saved. Birchnall had to be alert to rescue Alton and save bravely at the feet of Ahmed - who caused Alton problems all afternoon.

Alton had a glorious chance to double the lead, Luke Whiddett found Taylor Watts whose shot beat the keeper but cannoned back off the post, and as Watts steadied himself to tap the rebound home a defender got back to clear. Bunyan had a shot the keeper saved before Vics had two chances of their own first Birchnall saved from Prezepoloshi then from Butcher.

Eventually the Vics pressure told as they once again got down Alton's right and the ball was pulled back to the edge of the box where Hayworth was on hand to give Birchnall no chance. Whiddett cut in from the left making himself room to shoot with the keeper saving. A fine move involving Jackson, Smith and Bunyan saw Watts force a corner, another scramble ensued and with Alton claiming a goal the linesman this time kept his flag down, this was later confirmed by Vics players to be further over the line than the one given.

Vics sensing a let off were quickly back into their stride and another move down the right wing and an identical goal to the equaliser gave them the lead. Birchnall saved for a corner before another Alton corner saw Adolphe's header cleared off the line with Whiddett's follow up shot blocked. Another corner and Bunyan's header hot the bar and Jackson put the follow up wide, the half ended with Jackson heading wide from Whiddett's cross. Alton felt themselves unlucky to be behind at the break.

The second half started as the first finished Birchnall made a save before Tanner tested the Vics keeper. It was Vics who increased their lead when Ahmed cut in from the right wing and with the outside of his right foot curled the ball beyond Birchnall. Prezepoloshi shot high and wide before Alton pulled a goal back. Watts got down the left wing, cut along the bye line and pulled the ball back for Bunyan to tap in to give Alton hope.

Alton were nearly caught out with a ball over the top of their defence and as Ahmed bore down on goal Adolphe got back and made a fine tackle to clear the danger. Vics forced a corner and with Alton's defence giving Vics players the freedom of the box the ball ended in the back of the net as the two goal difference was restored.

Alton now started to fall apart another ball over the top and Burton ran through and gave Birchnall no chance for their fifth. Vics sub Young shot wide before they scored their sixth, as again the Ahmed led them a dance and shot across goal into the far corner. Birchnall had to be alert to again save at the feet of a Vics player as he got beyond the Alton defence.

Alton's poor luck in front of goal continued as from a rare corner Bunyan's header was cleared off the line. On another day Alton would have put the game to bed before half time, but it wasn't to be. They now have a week off with no game this Saturday before they welcome bottom of the table Andover Town to the Enclosure next Tuesday - where they will be hoping to end this barren run.
