Alton 2 - 6 Romsey Town

Alton were up against it from the start on Saturday, playing in-form Romsey and with player availability, injuries and with an eye on Wednesday nights cup semi final it was always going to be tough.


Romsey started quickest and took the lead with only five minutes played James Clifton on the Romsey left wing got to the bye line, his cross was parried and Draycott reacted quickest to open the scoring.

Mat Bunyan had a speculative shot saved, before Romsey doubled their lead when as Chandler appeared to be fouled as he went to clear the ball, the foul wasn't given and again Clifton won the ball, and his cross was turned in by Liam Magee.

Scott Sanderson found room on the edge of the Romsey box and forced Philpott into a full length save.

This was then just the catalyst for Romsey to score again as the same old story Clifton crossed and Magee had the freedom of the penalty area to pick his spot and put Romsey three up.

Matt Petts saved from Clifton, before Alton were handed a lifeline, Sanderson had a shot blocked and in the melee that followed Chandler was fouled in the penalty area and a penalty given. Chandler dusted himself down and sent the keeper the wrong way to give Alton hope.

More good play from Alton followed and then a fine move involving Bunyan and Jackson saw Jackson's cross flicked on by Sanderson and Liam Knight turned and shot home from the edge of the box to score Alton's second in four minutes.

Jackson had a shot blocked, before Romsey scored their forth just before half time when a defence splitting ball found Dunn, who rounded Petts and slotted home.

The game became more even at the start of the second half, Chandler had a free kick saved with Romsey able to clear the follow up.

A fine run by Romsey's full back Fawley saw his cross find Clifton unmarked at the far post, but he somehow managed to miscue his shot over the bar.

Callum Burch had a shot saved ,before two goals in two minutes put the game well and truly out of Alton's reach. once Romsey scored their sixth goal, they managed the game to the end and apart from a Steve Black header that was tipped over by the Romsey keeper, and a fine through ball from Max Smith that just skipped away from Jackson, Alton had to defend so the score did not become embarrassing.

Romsey are by far the best side we have played this season and it was easy to see why are just three points off the top of the table.

Alton need to dust themselves down for the Cup semi-final on Wednesday and then a trip to the Isle of Wight on Saturday.
