Folland Sports 4 - 2 Alton

Posted: 07.01.19

Alton suffered a defeat in their first game of the year and in honesty a poor first half performance cost them the points.

The game was fairly even to start, Brian Graham shot wide for Follands when well placed before a Scott Sanderson cross was cleared for a corner that came to nothing.

Alton were awarded a free kick, and Max Smith's kick found Taylor Watts, who cut in and shot just wide. Follands were causing problems going forward and after McLean had shot over they took the lead, a deep corner was headed home at the far post by Luke Ryman.

This set back seemed to stir Alton into life, from another Smith free kick Sanderson's header was saved. Reece Colbourne set Watts away and his cross was cleared for a corner, and again Alton were unable to make use of it.

The equaliser that Alton were threatening finally came as Steve Black sent Watts through and he kept his cool to round the keeper and shoot home.

An almost identical move minutes later and this time unfortunalty Watts shot wide. With Watts causing problems Alton thought they had taken the lead when Chandler headed home a Watts cross only to be thwarted by the linesman's flag.

It was rather against the run of play that Follands regained the lead, an attack was defended well and the ball was laid back to Brandon Williams, some how goal keeper Boughton missed his cross and the ball was headed against the bar and just over the line by McLean.

Worse was to come for Alton as two minutes later, Callum Oliver made it three as he shot home through a crowd of players after Alton failed to deal with an attack.

With Follands defence becoming a little cynical Alton were awarded a free kick twenty five yards from goal, Matt Bunyan's curled free kick was tipped onto the bar and over for a corner. With manager Mark Corbett's half time words still ringing in their ears Alton started the second half brightly and Jack Chandler shot wide, from a corner Ben Williams shot over.

Colbourne gave away a free kick from which Brian Graham shot wide. Sanderson headed wide before the game became a bit of a midfield battle.

Eventually the goal Alton had been threatening came. Sub Matt Jackson forced a corner and from Chandlers deep corner Ben Williams headed home. Graham had a shot which Boughton tipped over. Watts was fouled as he threatened to break through and from Smiths free kick Bunyan's header was saved. Another Jackson cross and another corner nearly bought the equaliser, but Bunyan couldn't keep his header down and it went over the bar.

With Alton pressing gaps were left at the back and Williams had to be alert to clear after Follands got in behind Adkins.

In added time Follands completed the scoring when Colbourne and Adkins got in a tangle and Shieibatzden got in behind the defence and as Boughton came out he shot home.

And so the game finished in defeat, in truth a poor first half performance cost Alton anything from the game. They will need to up their game next weekend as they travel on Saturday to play third placed Hythe & Dibden then on the Tuesday night travel for a League Cup quarter final to premier division Baffin Milton Rovers.
