Alton 1 - 2 Hythe & Dibden

Posted: 25.11.18

Alton took on second placed Hythe on Saturday and in an entertaining game with both teams getting the ball down to play football, were perhaps a little unfortunate to lose.

For most of the game the defences were on top and clear cut chances for both sides were few and far between. Hythe started brightly but the first chance fell to Alton when Reece Colbourne got down the right and his cross just evaded Jack Chandler.

Hythe's Pittman had a shot straight at Boughton, before they forced a corner which came to nothing.

Ryan Thomas found Matt Bunyan, who cut in, but shot wide. Pittman had another shot saved, before Wyatt shot from twenty five yards but straight at Boughton.

Chandler and Bunyan combined and Bunyan's shot was saved by Grant in the Hythe goal. Chandler had a shot blocked and from the ricochet, Hythe got down the Alton right, but George Spiers was alert to clear for a corner, from the corner O'Dell had a chance but was wide of the target.

Another move involving Chandler and Bunyan saw Chandler injured and replaced by Sanderson. Pittman had another chance saved, before Alton forced their first corner of the game, which came to nothing.

Hythe's Terzidiz was cautioned by the referee when he took Colbourne out in the centre circle, another day and another referee and he may well have seen red. Matt Graham took the free kick, which bounced about in the penalty area but was cleared, by a Hythe defender.

Hythe forced a corner at the start of the second half, the header by former Southampton player Jo Tessam hit the post and Ben Williams cleared the danger. Good work by Muir and Sanderson saw Alton force a corner that was half cleared and Matt Graham's shot was punched clear by Grant, the ball was headed back into the box by Thomas and as Bunyan went to collect he appeared to be fouled but the referee waved away Alton's appeal for a penalty.

Woodward of Hythe shot wide, Colbourne had a cross that the keeper caught before Jo Tessam gave Hythe the lead, a corner came out to him and his arrow like shot found the bottom corner with Boughton unsighted and unable to save.

Alton thought they had equalised almost immediately as Gavin Muir got down the left and his cross was met by Bunyan and with Alton celebrating the keeper somehow got across to claw the ball off the line and away.

With Alton pressing for an equaliser and Hythe going for the second goal the game opened up a bit, Bunyan had a shot saved, before Boughton had to be alert to keep Hythe out. A ball into the box and Bunyan flicked on to Sanderson whose shot was blocked for a corner, form the resulting corner Sanderson's header was cleared off the line.

O'Dell should have increased Hythe's lead when he had a free header, but failed to hit the target and headed over.

The second goal cam when Woodward received the ball on the left cut in past Colbourne and rifled a shot into the far corner giving Boughton no chance.

With the game seemingly won, Hythe got men behind the ball to keep Alton out, and chances at both ends became a premium, Alton did get a goal back right at the end of the game, a ball into the box found Bunyan, he won the challenge with the keeper who had come out to try and clear, and as Bunyan shot he was fouled by Steer and the referee gave Alton the penalty. Taylor Watts sent the keeper the wrong way, but unfortunalty for Alton that was almost the final action as full time was called as Hythe kicked off.

Alton can take heart from their performance as they look to kick on in the top echelons of the table.

Alton travel to Tadley Calleva on Tuesday in the North Hants Senior Cup before New Milton are at The Enclosure on Saturday.
