Alton 2 - 2 Newport (IoW)

Posted: 06.08.18

Alton started the new season on Saturday against relegated Newport, and will be disappointed that they didn't take all three points.

As often as last season they paid the price for not taking the chance when on top. The game was played in hot sunshine throughout. It was Newport who started brightest and Spiers had to be alert to get in a block that went for a corner as early as the third minute.

Alton gradually got a foot in the game, Callum Burch found Scott Sanderson but his shot was saved by Hall in the Newport goal. Ben Williams got a fine block in as Newport got in down Alton's right.

Midway through the half Steve Black gave Alton the lead as he taped home from the edge of the six yard box. From this point on through to half time Alton dominated, unfortunalty they didn't take any of the chances that would have put the game beyond Newport.

Sanderson got in behind the Newport defence but with Hall coming out to meet him put his shot agonisingly wide. Alton won a free kick and Burch's cross found Sanderson but he shot straight at Hall. Alton were switching the play nicely as they continued to probe for the second goal, Chris Adkins playing further forward then normal had a rasping drive which again Hall was equal to. Reece Colbourne got down the right and his cross was only half cleared to the edge of the box, Burch controlled and then curled his shot wide.

Following a foul, Matt Graham's free kick was headed back across goal by Burch, but Adkins couldn't get the ball under control and the chance went begging.

The second half started as the first had ended, Hitch was fouled but the free kick came to nothing. A rare foray forward by Newport almost got Holmes in but he was flagged offside.

Alton finally doubled their lead when after good work on the left Black crossed, the keeper could only palm the ball away and Burch was on hand to score from close range. Instead of kicking on, Alton were guilty of thinking job done and sat back and were punished for poor defending as they tried to play out and were caught in possession and Taylor ran at the back line and with Alton retreating placed his shot in the bottom corner with Bufton routed to the spot to pull a goal back.

Newport now sensed they may get something out of the game and they got the equaliser when Wetherick got his head to the ball and guided it home for the equaliser.

Alton manager Mark Corbett rang the changes as he looked for Alton to regain the lead, substitute Henry Fox failed to get on the end of another Graham free kick, Sanderson got free, but his shot was blocked for Charlesworth for a corner. The corner was half cleared and it came out to former youth team player Liam Knight who played a delightful one two to work a shooting position but somehow his shot across the keeper was deflected wide for another corner. Unfortunalty for Alton, Spiers headed that one just over, and so the referee bought the game to an end.

Alton will look at the game as two points lost as opposed to one gained. With no game next weekend due to the FA Cup, Alton will look to take the positives as they regroup for the trip to Petersfield on Tuesday 14th.
