Alton 4 - 0 New Milton Town

Posted: 01.04.18

Alton consolidated eighth place in the league on Saturday as they sent ninth place New Milton packing, and in truth the gap could and should have been bigger as they had a second half penalty saved, hit the bar and the post.

It was New Milton who started brightest and Matt Petts had to be alert to save from Ron Frost and from the resulting corner Matt Graham cleared a header from Dom Falco off his own line. It didn't take long for Alton to take the lead, as following a foul on Luke Perkins, Regan Hitch took the ball down in the box and was unceremoniously dumped to the ground right in front of the referee. Jack Chandler stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to give Alton the lead. The goal spurred New Milton forward and O'Sullivan shot but Petts saved, Perkins beat his full back and got down the wing, but somehow Danny Knee managed to scope his shot over. Frost again shot wide from distance, before Kieron Robinson rattled the New Milton bar and again Knee could not keep the rebound down and it sailed over. New Milton's main threat came form the long throws of Frost but Petts and centre back pair Ben Williams and Regan Hitch dealt with them all afternoon, Williams got in a block before Alton increased their lead. Callum Burch intercepted a New Milton cross field throw in, and bore down on goal and as the keeper came out he calmly slotted it underneath him for Alton's second. New Milton tried to up their game but with Alton's defence standing firm were reduced to shots from distance that went harmlessly wide. New Milton were posing a threat and Alton new the next goal was going to be critical, and they were handed the chance to increase the lead at the start of the second half, Chandler was fouled in the box, but his second penalty of the game was saved by Hollier, but the third goal wasn't long in coming, Petts's ball out of defence was taken down by Perkins, who found Knee who he bore down on goal, as the defender tried to block him off, he cleverly found Chandler who gave the keeper no chance for Alton's third. Alton were now on top and following good work from Chandler and Knee, Luke Perkins was unlucky when his shot hit the post with the keeper rooted to the spot. Alton completed the scoring on 68 minutes when Knee collected the ball midway in the New Milton half, beat his man and shot home from 25 yards with the keeper floundering. New Milton's sub White somehow shot over when unmarked in the six yard box. Some of the New Milton players were now getting rattled and Frost was dismissed for two yellow cards within five minutes. Alton looked to take advantage of the extra space and Knee shot over, before Petts was forced to go full length to keep his goal in tact, Alton sub Max Paddon got in behind the New Milton defence and as the keeper came out he lobbed him but unfortunalty it came back off the bar and there was no one around and New Milton cleared. Alton finished on top, sub Jason Grenham couldn't quite get on the end of Perkins cross and then following a ball into the box his shot was somehow saved and then scrambled away to safety. And so the game ended with a comfortable victory for a buoyant Alton in front of a healthy attendance of 132.
