Ringwood Town 2 - 1 Alton

Posted: 26.03.18

With players unavailable, Alton travelled to Ringwood on Saturday with the bare eleven players, and put up a good performance, and it was only because they had to play the whole of the second half with ten men after Rob Haig was forced off with a broken foot that they succumbed to defeat.

The game started brightly for both sides, Alton forced an early corner which Matt Jackson got underneath, while at the other end Callum Wells shot wide.

The game settled down and from a Ringwood cross Harris was unable to convert at the far post, Ben Williams intercepted when it looked like Ringwood had broken the Alton back line, then Jackson got in for Alton but was marshalled wide and the chance was gone.

Ringwood had a fine move which saw a shot blocked before Joe Brock in Alton's goal saved. Jackson's pace was causing Ringwood problems as he got down the right, but with no one able to keep up the cross sailed harmlessly away.

Jack Chandler was fouled and from Graham's free kick Haig's shot went wide, then it was Haig's turn to cross and on the edge of the box Callum Burch couldn't get his shot away as he was shut down.

Alton finally took the lead when once again Jackson got down the right and this time Jack Chandler had made the box and scored at the far post for his first Alton goal.

This spurred Ringwood forward and Chandler had to be alert to block a shot from Cowland, before both Vint and Smith shot wide. Then came the innocuous tackle that was to force Haig off as he went to collect a ball on the half way line and he came off worst in a strong tackle. Brock had to be alert to tip over as Ringwood started to take advantage of the injury to Haig.

Alton changed their shape to cope with only having ten as the second half started and Williams blocked a shot, Danny Knee now playing at right back was fouled, the free kick found Jackson but his cross went over the bar.

Ringwood were beginning to find space and it was no surprise when they equalised, Alton conceded a free kick and from the ball into the box, Pepe Smith's slight touch gave Brock no chance.

Ringwood sensed victory and Vint and Smith both headed wide, before a rare Alton attack resulted in Jackson missing a glorious chance in front of goal as he miss hit his shot and while the keeper managed to parry, no one was alert to put the ball into the empty net. It was a chance that Alton would rue as Lee Vint gave Ringwood the lead when he got in between the Alton back line and fired into the corner. Chandler had a cross shot go wide for Alton, before a frustrating afternoon came to an end.

Special mention must be made to the players that travelled and put in a fine performance in trying circumstances and Alton will look back knowing that with a bit more commitment and a full eleven for the whole game, the result would have been so different.
