Alton 2 - 1 East Cowes Victoria

Posted: 05.02.18

Alton returned to The Enclosure for their first home game in five weeks when they entertained East Cowes Vics. They also welcomed Wey Valley Radio sport show presenters Mark Taylor and Paul Aris, who kindly agreed to sponsor the Alton man of match award.

Alton started brightly and forced early pressure and won an early corner. from the corner Ben Williams appeared to be fouled as he was about to head home but the referee waved play on. With the pace of the front three of Matt Jackson, Danny Knee and Callum Burch causing the back four of Vics problems, it was Jackson who almost got on the end of a Thomas through ball.

Burch had a shot that Russell in the Vics saved, the corner was cleared before Clarkes cross was taken by the keeper with Knee hovering.

Vics gradually started to get a foot in the game and Browne shot over when well paced, and then Williams blocked a shot by Sheppard. Jackson had a chance to give Alton the lead but after making space for himself shot into the side netting.

The goal Alton had been threatening finally arrived when Knee picked the ball up in midfield and with time and space shot home giving the keeper no chance. Alton pressed for a second and Burch was just wide, before as all to often this season Alton took their foot of the peddle and allowed Vics back in the game, Matt Petts had to be alert and bravely saved at the feet of Waterson , before a needlessly given away free kick went wide, Woodman had a shot cross go over before under pressure Petts punched away a corner, Petts was forced to save again before as the half ended Jackson had a chance, but with the keeper beaten a defender got back to clear off the line.

Alton started the second half brightly George Callard had a shot wide, before Prezperski shot wide for Vics. Then a fine through ball from Graham found Jackson and as be bore down on goal, he miscontrolled and the ball ran through to the keeper. Knee got down the wing and his pulled back cross was somehow saved by the keeper, before the inevitable equaliser came, Alton failed to deal with a high ball into the box and in the ensuing melee the ball fell to Dexter Main who gave Petts no chance.

This was the catalyst for Alton to up their game and put pressure on the Vics goal, Burch had a shot saved and Knee got to the rebound first but again a Vics defender managed to clear off the line. Paddon replaced Jackson, and he forced a corner, before he collected a Clarke through ball, spun his defender and forced the keeper into a fine save.

It was all Alton pressure as they went for the second goal and Knee and Paddon combined only to be denied by the linesman's flag. Knee collected the ball out wide and after skipping an attempted foul by Vics had a shot that again the keeper saved. With time running out Corbett found Paddon and his shot was pushed away for a corner. Matt Graham took the corner that was cleared back to him, he controlled and hit a sweet shot into the top corner, to the relief of Alton players and fans alike. There was still time for Alton to throw away the victory but with Petts beaten Williams got back to clear off the line.

And so Alton got the victory their play warranted, and with a bit more composure in front of goal would have had victory secured much earlier. Callum Burch collected the Wey Valley Radio Man of the Match award for his all-round play and effort in driving Alton forward.

Next up for Alton is a trip to AFC Stoneham next Saturday.
