Tadley Calleva 6 - 1 Alton

Posted: 08.01.18

Alton crashed to a heavy defeat against third placed Tadley on Saturday, who showed their quality in finishing chances which showed why they are near the top of the Wessex league and one of the favourites for promotion.

The first half was an even affair although Tadley had the better chances, Denham and Coventry had shots that went wide before Max Paddon had Alton's first chance but his shot came back off the post. Lewis Boughton had to save from Charlick before Danny Knee got away down the wing causing Charlsey to clear over his own bar.

Soon after Alton took the lead Ollie Copplestone and Mark Corbett combined and Corbett was bought down in the box. Taylor Watts gave Harris no chance with his spot kick with his tenth goal of the season. This set back spurred Tadley forward and the Alton goal led a charmed life as shots were blocked, missed the goal or were saved by Boughton.

It was no surprise when Tadley equalised when Brett Denham shot home after a through ball from former Alton player Tom Walsh. just before the break Tadley rather fortuitously took the lead, Ben Williams put in a fine block tackle on the edge of the area, but unfortunalty the ball ballooned to Denham - who looked suspiciously off side, but he shot home to give Tadley the lead.

The second half became a struggle for Alton as Tadley applied the pressure to increase the pressure on the top two. Alton were defending well with Matt Graham and Williams getting in important blocks. When Alton did managed to clear the ball out of the danger zone, all to often it came straight back, Tadley increased the lead through one of these as Alton lost the ball on the half way line and Denham found space between the defence to give Boughton no chance.

Alton had a period of pressure and Knee and Corbett had shots blocked before Alton were caught out again and Paul Coventry lobbed Boughton for Tadley's forth, almost immediately Denham scored his forth and Tadley's fifth.

Tadley sensed more goals and Hamilton hit the bar before Vickers headed over. Knee had a shot saved and Corbett shot over the bar before Phillips completed the scoring in the last minute. On this performance it is easy to see why Tadley are near the top of the division and there is much work for Alton to do, if their season is not going to fall away.

Next up for Alton is a visit to Downton next Saturday.
