Alton 2 - 1 Andover New Street

Posted: 18.12.17

Alton signed off their 2017 home games with a fine victory on Saturday against second in the table Andover New Street.

Manager Mark Corbett had used his Portsmouth connections in the week to sign Academy youngsters Jack Chandler and Jordan Brooks on loan and they both fitted in to Alton's system of play.

The first half was end to end, with both sides creating chances, and both keepers being kept busy. Oliver Yates had New Street's first chance and his shot was saved by Lewis Boughton in the Alton goal.

Alton's Taylor Watts and Danny Knee combined well, but Knee's cross was just to high for Watts. Matt Graham was able to deal with a Yates run before Reece Colbourne moved effortlessly out of defence but his cross into the New Street box was cleared.

Ben Williams had a chance when a New Street defender thought the ball was going out, and he got in behind but was unable to steer his shot goal bound. Knee robbed Trapnell and shot wide, before Boughton was in action again saving from Shane Locke.

Alton's best chance of the half fell to Watts but as he bore down on goal Dave Tasker in the New Street goal pulled off a fine save to keep his side in the game. Neve should then have given New Street the lead but he somehow headed wide when well placed.

Boughton was called into action again when he blocked another shot by Neve and as the rebound appeared to be going over the line he managed to scoop the ball away and Copplestone completed the clearance.

Knee shot wide before Max Paddon got down the right but his cross was cleared, as the half ended Copplestone got back to block a shot from Beavis.

Alton came out for the second half geed up by their first half performance and Knee sliced a clearance over his own bar before Watts had a shot parried by the New Street keeper but no one was on hand for the rebound.

Alton were threatening and it was no surprise, when they took the lead, Knee played the ball through to Watts in the inside left channel and he hit it sweetly from twenty five yards that went in off the near post with Tasker routed to the spot.

The goal spurred Watts on and he cut in from the right and shot high, before Yates shot high for New Street. Brooks was having a fine game in the centre of Alton's midfield and his shot was blocked before Ben Williams had to be alert to clear off his own line with Boughton beaten.

George Callard played the ball down the wing to Knee and his cross caught Tasker out and sailed over his head to double Alton's lead. Alton threatened more goals and substitute Callum Burch was unlucky with a header and Brooks had a shot saved before in added time Neve pulled a goal back for New Street, but it was too little too late and Alton got the three points their performance warranted.

Next week they are on their travels as they go to Totton & Eling in the Wessex League division one.
