Hythe & Dibden 0 - 2 Alton

Posted: 10.12.17

Alton returned from Hythe on Saturday with three points, a third clean sheet in four games, after putting in a fine workman like performance.

With injuries to key players still having an effect, John Cass returned at full back which allowed George Callard to step into midfield to replace the suspended Sean Hayes.

Alton started brightly and Danny Knee and George Callard combined to set up Max Paddon, but he was unable to keep control and the chance went begging. Hythe forced a corner and from that Liam Golding forced Lewis Boughton to save.

John Cass was combining well down the right with Danny Knee, but his cross was blocked for a corner that came to nothing as Hythe cleared. Knee shot over before he thought he had given Alton the lead, a delightful in swinging cross from Taylor Watts found Knee unmarked, but his header rolled agonisingly wide of the far post. Hythe went straight up the other end and Boughton was forced to save from Craig Kingswell.

Alton were trying to force the game and from a Joe Clarke cross, Hythe cleared for a corner, unfortunalty for Alton Ben Williams was unable to keep his header on target. Watts had a shot saved before Hythe produced their best chance of the first half when Fred Molyneux shot wide with Boughton routed to the spot.

John Cass set up Clarke but his header went wide before Matt Graham had to be alert as Danquair played in Luke Watts, but Graham got back to make the tackle just as Watts was about to shoot.

So with the first half all square a lot of the spectators felt that the first goal would decide the game, and it fell Alton's way, as Danny Knee won the ball on the half way line, made one of his trade mark runs down the wing and Paddon got in front of Hythe's center half Cario Burton to turn Knee's cross past Fredericks to give Alton the lead.

With the goal Hythe seemed to wilt away as Alton took advantage, Knee set up Paddon again but he was adjudged to have been offside.

After a substitution for both side Lewis Boughton was forced to go full length to keep out Kingswell's shot and preserve Alton's lead. It proved to be a crucial save as two minutes later Alton doubled the lead. Ollie Copplestone won the ball back in midfield and played the ball to Mark Corbett, his delightful flick found Taylor Watts in space and his left foot shot gave the keeper no chance.

Alton were now in the ascendancy and how they didn't increase the lead is a mystery. A fine move involving Knee and Corbett saw Joe Clarke's side foot shot give the keeper no chance but just go the wrong side of the post.

Knee cut in and had a shot blocked, before Hythe had a rare chance but it came to nothing as the cross was headed over.

There was time for Corbett to have a shot saved before the referee bought the game to a close. Another fine hard won three points for the Brewers, who will have to be at their best next weekend when the entertain second in the table Andover New Street.
