Alton 0 - 1 US Portsmouth

Posted: 04.12.17

With injuries and suspensions beginning to have its effect, Alton had to ring the changes on Saturday and Max Paddon came in from the Reserves to lead the attack that was shorn of both Scott Sanderson and Callum Burch with injury.

The game was very scrappy and the result hung on missed chances, as Alton were guilty of missing chances to put the game to bed and then conceded the only goal of the game.

US had an uncompromising style and almost immediately they received a yellow card when Smith crudely took Sean Hayes out in the midfield after he had played the ball wide, on another day with another referee it could easily have been red.

Chances were few and far between in the early stages of the game. Mark Corbett had a chance cleared, before US's Cal Glen ran through the middle of Alton's defence but Matt Graham got back to clear, US then forced a corner and Phil Archibald headed over.

Danny Knee was then fouled and from Graham's free kick Ben Williams headed over. Chances were now coming thick and fast at both ends without either goal keeper really being troubled, Knee had a header wide, before Corbett shot wide and at the other end Silvanus shot wide and Michael Dark shot wide when well placed.

Alton's best chance fell to Danny Knee, when player manager Mark Corbett, played a delightful through ball inside the full back for Knee to run onto, but he was unable to keep his shot down and it sailed jut over the bar. The half ended with US on top and Archibald forced Lewis Boughton to save at full stretch as he tipped his shot over the bar. Form the resultant corner George Callard was alert to clear off the line.

The second half started with chances falling for both sides without much final quality. Knee and Corbett combined but once again the chance was cleared. Max Paddon got away down the line but his cross was just to high for Corbett at the far post, Paddon himself had a shot wide, before US started to get back into the game Beale had a shot blocked for a corner before good work by Corbett and Knee set Taylor Watts away but US got back to block his shot.

Alton then had their best chance to score Paddon forced the keeper into a fine diving save and with him still on the floor Corbett somehow put his follow up over the bar. This proved to be costly as following a foul by Hayes for which he was cautioned, US took the lead. The free kick was played into the box and was only half cleared to the edge of the box and Michael Dark fired home through a throng of players.

Danny Knee was having some joy down the wing, but his final ball was often too hard or too high for any one to get on the end of, Paddon shot wide and Alton became guilty of trying to force the game, Knee shot wide, before Hayes played a fine through ball and Watt's shot was deflected for a corner.

US were now getting everyone back behind the ball from a Colbourne long throw Hayes was unlucky as his shot went just the wrong side of the upright.

US managed to get forward and having been crudely fouled again Sean Hayes was dismissed when he received his second yellow card in the melee that followed.

And so a frustrating game for Alton was bought to a close. They must now dust themselves down as they travel to play Hythe & Dibden next Saturday in the Wessex League.
