Alton Youth 6 - 4 Guildford City

Updated: 31.10.17

Alton came off the back of a 4-2 league victory against Fleet Spurs, with goals from Liam Knight, James Laird and a brace from Jack Grover. This was not a great performance and two late goals kept Alton’s unbeaten run in the league going.

In the League Cup Alton came up against Guildford, with both sides scoring a hatful of goals in the lead to this point, the game delivered goals as it suggested it might. Both sides showed good attacking intent from the start, but the first goal was to come from the penalty spot as the visitors got the award of a dubious penalty decision which was dually slotted home. This stung the home side into action and after threatening from numerous corners, Alton eventually equalised when Ben Carlisle bundled ball home from close range, the home side to the lead soon after when James Laird picked up the ball on the edge of the area and smashed the ball home.

HT Alton 2 Guildford 1

The second half found Alton gain the upper hand and creating chance after chance, but they had to wait for the next goal which came after some good work from Joe Gasson who squared to Harry Rolfe who smashed the ball home from 12 yards of the underside of the bar. Alton could not put the game to bed and the visitors kept going and reduced the lead with a tremendous curling strike, they now had their tails up and equalised after Alton failed to clear and the visitor’s scored from close range with a header. Alton had to withstand some pressure but did get back in front when a strike from Joe Mcleod found the net from 18 yards . this spurred the home team on and substitute Reiss Deere curled in a stunning goal from fully 20 yards after cutting in on to his favoured left foot. He was then on target again after beating the keeper to the ball and calmly slotting the ball home. The home side let Guildford have the last word with a goal on the final whistle which took a bit of the gloss of the game for the home side but what a game for those watching.

FT Alton 6 Guildford 4

The game had 3 or 4 goals that would have graced the hieghest levels and must have been a great advert for the league.

Alton return to league action on Tuesday 31st October when they entertain Walton & Hersham 7.45 ko. If the last game anything to go by will be worth attending.
