Alton 4 - 2 Verwood Town

Updated: 16.10.17

Both sides came into Saturday's Wessex Division One game in confident mood, having both scored four goals the week before.

The game was not as close as the score line suggests and had Alton not been wasteful in front of goal the game would have been out of site before half time.

Alton attacked from the start and Reece Colbourne shot over , before two corners came to nothing. Callum Burch got away from his marker and found Sean Hayes in space but he was unable to keep his shot down.

A rare Verwood attack ended with a free kick and Alton's defence managed to clear without too much issue. Joe Clarke picked up the ball in defence and made strides through the Verwood defence before releasing Danny Knee, but Ben Daniels in the Verwood goal was equal to it and made the save.

Sean Hayes had a great chance to open the scoring when Matt Graham picked him out but after controlling the ball he dragged his shot wide. Fine work by Danny Knee resulted in an Alton corner, the ball was half cleared and Joe Clarke shot over from just outside the area. Following good work by Taylor Watts and Callum Burch saw Danny Knee shoot just wide, before against the run of play Alton found themselves behind right on the stroke of half time, when Verwood full back Jamie Webber got down the wing and played the ball square to Russell Dyer who gave Matt Petts in the Alton goal no chance.

It didn't take Alton long to get level as Ollie Copplestone forced the ball home as the second half was just two minutes old.

The game opened up a bit as Verwood realised that there may be something for them in the game, and it was no surprise when they went back in front, when James Guthrie was given the freedom of Alton's penalty area to plant his header out of Petts's reach.

Chances came and went for Alton before Copplestone found Knee and he bore down on goal and his shot gave Daniels no chance to bring the scores level once again. Both sides were creating chances and Petts had to be at his best to prevent Verwood taking the lead again with a fine save. Burch headed wide from a corner before Alton took the lead for the first time in the game. An Alton corner was only half cleared, Graham played the ball back into the box for Watts to head back across goal and Callum Burch got in front of the keeper to head home. This was just what Alton needed and they upped their game and started to get on top again, Danny Knee got away down the wing and his cross found Burch whose shot was blocked, the ball fell to Hayes whose shot was also blocked but third time lucky Copplestone then drove the loose ball home for Alton's forth.

Verwood had a chance to reduce the deficit when Martin Smith headed over, before Alton substitutes, Scott Sanderson and Jody Thorpe combined with Thorpe just unable to get on the end of Sanderson's cross. A Verwood corner was cleared out to the right and Colbourne ran almost the length of the pitch but unfortunalty his cross was cleared. From the resulting corner John Cass's shot was saved by the keeper.

And so the game ended, a bit closer than Alton would have liked. They take a break from league action next Saturday when they travel to Bristol to play Hengrove Athletic in the FA Vase.
