Alton 7 - 3 Amesbury Town (FA Vase)

Updated: 25.09.17

Alton progressed to the next round of the FA Vase on Saturday as they put Wessex Premier side Amesbury to the sword in a scintillating first half performance, where they put the game out of the visitors' sight.

Alton took the lead in the second minute as Danny Knee got down the right and his cross was headed home by Callum Burch. Amesbury forced a corner before a Burch cross found Danny Knee and Scott Sanderson getting in each others way and the chance when begging.

It wasn't long though before Alton doubled their lead when from another Knee cross, John Cass saw his shot saved by Creese in the Amesbury goal but Scott Sanderson was on hand to fire home the rebound.

Alton were now rampant, Taylor Watts left his defender floundering and his shot had the keeper flapping at thin air, but unfortunately it crashed back off the bar, good work followed by Watts and Knee who set Burch free, but the keeper was equal to his shot.

Sanderson had another shot blocked, before Knee robbed Palmer in the centre circle and fed Burch but again the keeper came to Amesbury's rescue. From the resultant corner as Amesbury threatened to break away Joe Clarke put in a trade mark tackle, the ball found Watts whose sublime pass to Knee allowed the striker to give Creese no chance for Alton's third.

With Matt Petts in the Alton goal almost a spectator Ollie Copplestone shot over, before a rare Amesbury attack saw Cameron George shot over Petts's bar. All this did was to spur Alton forward and following good work from Knee this allowed Burch to net his second and Alton's forth. Almost immediately Sanderson was unceremoniously fouled, and he took sweet revenge as he got on the end of Clarke's resultant free kick to head home Alton's fifth.

The half ended with a Burch shot saved and then Amesbury's Jordan Matthews found himself unmarked in the Alton six yard box, he controlled the ball and then some how managed to shoot wide with the goal at his mercy.

Alton started the second half sloppily and Cameron Roach headed in at the back post to give Amesbury hope. This was hope that lasted all of one minute as Burch played in Sanderson who completed his hat-trick giving Creese no chance.

Having put the game out of Amesbury's reach with their first half performance Alton paid the price for easing off when Connor Miller once again reduced the deficit when the ball was allowed to fly across Alton's penalty area and he gave Petts no chance. Danny Knee got away and his cross found substitute Sean Hayes who shot over when well placed and then Sanderson played the ball back and Hayes was just unable to get on the end of it.

Petts made a save before Kieron Stephens scored Amesbury's third following more slack defending. Substitute Jody Thorpe had a cross that came to nothing before he cut in from the right and his left foot shot was saved for a corner.

From the resultant corner Sanderson's header was blocked on the line, but the rebound fell to Ben Williams who fired home Alton's seventh to complete the scoring.

Alton will look back on this as a job well done on opposition from the division above and in truth no one would have lived with their first half performance, which was where the game was won.

They now travel to Romsey Town next Saturday in the league where they will want to continue this form.
