Alton 2 - 1 Folland Sports

Updated: 17.09.17

Alton hosted Folland Sports on Saturday, and after a complacent start they eventually turned the score round, with Player/Manager Mark Corbett netting the winner.

In an unexpectedly even first quarter, both sides exchanged half chances. Folland created the first decent chance after 23 minutes when a one-two lead to a blocked shot on the edge of the box. And a minute later Folland were to shock Alton by taking the lead. The Left Winger Kevin Cutter wasn't closed down and he slipped in Lewis Crook who finished one on one.

This spurred Alton into life Mark Corbett got in one on one and fired at the Keeper who parried and Danny Knee struck the rebound just wide. Knee was at it again 3 minutes later when John Cass fed him, he cut in and shot just over left footed. Winger Taylor Watts fired in a fierce cross from the left that flew narrowly past all attempted contacts. soon after Watts flicked to Knee and he had another powerful shot blocked from 25 yards.

Folland replied with a shot of their own that went over from 20 yards. And 2 minutes into added time Matty Graham swung in a corner for Scott Sanderson to direct a header towards the far post, but it was cleared off the line.

Angered at being 0-1 down at half time, Alton vowed to turn the game around, with Corbett making the team shape bold and more attacking. 3 minutes into the half The Whites got the perfect start to their comeback when they counter attacked down the right, Corbett got played in and advanced towards the near post. He let the ball run towards the Keeper to draw him in before teeing up Knee with a sharply angled assist for a close range finish.

Alton now surged forward with Graham picking out Knee with a diagonal pass for Knee to lash a volley that nearly finished a spectacular move from twenty yards on the right. But after 58 minutes Mclean had another effort for Follands but Matt Petts was equal to it.

Alton were attacking again, when Ben Williams got his head to the far post delivery but was unable to keep it down. Alton created two more chances in quick succession when Watts swung a cross in for Callum Burch to head at the Keeper. And Corbett had a ball pop up to him that he volleyed just over.

Getting into the latter stages both teams pressed for the winner. Follands nearly grabbed it when they got to the right bye line and pulled back for Lewis Fear to blast over from fifteen yards.

And on 75 minutes The Brewers got what turned out to be the winner when Corbett pounced to regain possession from Follands Ben Pashley played a one-two with Burch and struck a low finish right footed towards the left side netting as the Keeper advanced. The Anstey Enclosure erupted and a wave of relief washed over the home support.

Knee was still in search of the spectacular and 4 minutes later benefited from a Burch flick and boomed a volley just over the top left corner.

But the game wasn't dead yet and Alton's hearts were in their mouths with 10 minutes to go, when a rolling combination across the edge of their box found an unmarked Fear who struck hard and low towards the bottom right corner, but Petts' strong left hand came to the rescue. A minute later Knee found Watts with a glorious dropping diagonal ball into the inside left channel to set up Watts for a one on one that got saved, and the rebound fell to Corbett, who side stepped the first challenge but was unbalanced by the second and his shot missed the right post from twenty yards.

Follands forced Petts to make another save from the edge of the box after 83 minutes. It was proving to be a thrilling finish... Graham hit another sweet corner for Sanderson to win another header in the six yard box but he was put under too much pressure to hit the target.

Alton now take a break from league action when they turn their attention to the FA Vase when they entertain Amesbury Town at The Enclosure next Saturday.
