As it was the game ebbed and flowed and chances came and went. Joe Brock on his Alton debut in for the injured Matt Petts had to be alert to save early on, before Taylor Watts got down the wing, but unfortunately for Alton George Callard could only turn the cross wide.
Danny Knee playing in a central role shot into the side netting, before forcing Ellis Grant in the Totton goal to save.
Alton were fortunate not to go behind when Matt Morris completely missed the ball when all he had to do was tap it into an empty net, which allowed Matt Graham time to clear.
This spurred Alton in to life and they enjoyed a spell of intense pressure, Callard shot over, Ollie Copplestone shot wide before Sean Hayes forced Grant into another save.
Hayes had a shot deflected for a corner, before good work by Copplestone released George Callard and he slide the ball under Grant to give Alton a deserved lead.
It was a lead that lasted just a minute as Alton's defence stood and watched as Bainbridge was given the freedom of the six yard box to equalise from a corner.
The second half started as the first had ended with Alton enjoying the majority of possession and looking more likely to score, and it was no surprise when Joe Clarke broke up play slid Sean Hayes in whose left foot drive restored Alton's lead.
Watts missed a glorious chance to increase the lead, but somehow following a goal mouth scramble Grant somehow managed to save.
Totton equalised rather against the run of play when having conceded a free kick Totton lumped the ball into the box and Copplestone was adjudged to have handled, Brock guest right but was just unable to reach Randell's penalty.
Danny Knee had shot saved, before he set up Mark Corbett who had come on as sub, only for Corbett's shot to crash back off the bar. Colbourne got clear and his cross just evaded everyone, from the follow up Taylor Watts forced a save from Grant.
Next up for Alton is a trip to Whitchurch United.
