East Cowes Victoria 2 - 2 Alton

Updated: 21.08.17

Alton made the trip to the Island on Saturday to play East Cowes and it looked at the beginning if they were still suffering from sea sickness, because as early as the second minute the defence parted in waves to allow Dexter Malin to sail through and give Petts no chance and put the home side one up, with their first goal of the season in their forth game.

Joe Craig shot wide for Cowes before Taylor Watts shot was kindly deflected straight to the Cowes keeper. Alton's defence was all at sea again when a through ball found Jimmi Burton, who rather easily beat John Cass at full back to double East Cowes lead.

Finally Alton seemed to wake up and realised that they were in a game and needed to improve, a corner was won that was headed clear, Sanderson was fouled and from Sean Hayes free kick, Liam Flanighan had a shot that Farley in the Cowes goals held onto with Watts lurking.

The game ebbed and flowed Watts had a shot saved, before Browne forced Petts into a save. John Cass was always willing to help getting forward and from his cross Sanderson shot just over.

What ever was said at half time certainly had the desired effect as from Sean Hayes's cross Taylor Watts header reduced the deficit. Petts had to be alert and brave as he came out and saved at the feet of Burton.

Alton were beginning to take charge and a fine cross from Watts found Danny Knee who thought he had got the equaliser only to be thwarted by a flag from the linesman signalling that Watts was offside.

From another Watts cross Joe Clarke was just a fraction away from scoring. Petts had to be alert after Ben Williams slipped and saved his side from going further behind.

Alton were having a lot of joy down the left and from a Hayes cross, Sanderson had a header saved.

It was no surprise when the East Cowes right back was replaced and Alton made a double change bringing on Burch and Thorpe to increase the pressure on the Cowes back line, Burch was immediately in the action crossing for Watts whose header was just over.

A change of shape bought Alton back in the game as Matt Graham was pushed up into a wide midfield role and from his through ball, Danny Knee controlled, turned his marker and shot past Farley to give Alton a deserved equaliser.

Just as Alton thought job done Watterson forced Petts into one final save to keep the score's level.

In reality this was two points dropped, as once Alton sorted out the early defensive mishaps they always looked the better team.

Next up is a trip to Brockenhurst in the Hampshire Senior Cup.
