Alton 8 - 4 Ringwood Town

Updated: 14.08.17

With the return of the Premier League Alton and Ringwood served up a twelve goal thriller that will have both managers pulling their hair out with some kamikaze defending by both teams.

The game had everything including a sending off for both sides and goals a plenty. This all seemed a long way away as Alton who were forced to make four changes from last week, took the lead with just two minutes on the clock as Danny Knee got away down the right and his cross was turned in at the far post by Scott Sanderson.

The game ebbed and flowed Ringwood's Matt Steer forced a save from Matt Petts, before Alton were awarded a free kick for a foul on Watts, Hitch's free kick found George Callard who shot wide.

Sanderson's off ball running was causing the Ringwood defence all sorts of problems and it was no surprise when a move involving Regan Hitch and Taylor Watts ended with Sanderson lobbing the keeper to double Alton's lead.

Barely had the watching supporters had time to acknowledge the goal than Taylor Watts got down the left and his cross was turned in at the back post by Danny Knee, to put Alton three up.

This third goal seemed to wake Ringwood up and Petts saved from Peter Richman-Cole, before Ben Williams got back to clear off his line from Ben Harris when Petts was beaten and a Ringwood goal looked likely.

George Callard shot wide from distance before Hitch and Harris were racing for the ball with both players guilty of shirt pulling and with the referee waving play on, the linesman intervened and waved for a foul against Hitch, once the referee conferred with his linesman Hitch's afternoon came to an early end as he was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity.

Despite being down to ten Alton took the game to Ringwood Danny Knee won a header against Lee Clark, who in a show of frustration kicked out leaving the referee no alternative but to send him off as well. From the resulting free kick by Joe Clarke, Sanderson headed back across goal and Taylor Watts added the finishing touch for Alton's forth.

With half time approaching Michael Cowland pulled a goal back for Ringwood with the Alton defence looking as though they thought the job had been done.

Alton started the second half like a train Sanderson had a header saved, Knee had a shot saved and then Ben Williams header was cleared off the line, so it was rather against the run of play that Ringwood got their second when Matt Steer shot home.

Two minutes later Sanderson got away from his defender and his shot beat the keeper but came back off the bar and Danny Knee was on hand to score from the rebound for Alton's fifth and his second.

With only ten aside there was lots of space and Harris and Steer both shot wide from distance before Alton were caught out in midfield and Cowland got his second.

With eyes on Tuesdays trip to Laverstock Goodall and Flanighan replaced Sanderson and Knee and it was Dan Goodall with his first senior goal after a fine move involving Watts for Alton's sixth.

Alton were now dominant and Max Paddon rounded the keeper for Alton's seventh. Dan Goodall had a run down the wing and from his cross field pass Taylor Watts got his second to complete Alton's scoring.

Jody Thorpe headed over before a fine run at Alton's defence by Lee Vint reduced the deficit to four, and so the game ended with everyone checking the score.

Special mention must be made for Joe Clarke who filled in at centre half when Hitch was sent off and gave a solid performance.

Alton will be looking to tighten up their defending when the travel to Laverstock & Ford on Tuesday night.
