Alton 5 - 0 Totton & Eling

Posted: 18.04.17

Following last weeks drubbing - this turned out to be almost the complete performance from Alton and probably one of their best performances of the season.

The Brewers welcomed back Scott Sanderson from injury, along with Ali Gill promoted from the Reserves.

The game started brightly with both teams intent on attack. Totton were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area when on another day it might have been given as a penalty that came to nothing before Sanderson set up Callum Burch who shot wide.

Taylor Watts was set free and his cross shot was cleared off the line by a Totton defender, Gavin Muir and Matt Jackson both had shots saved by Totton keeper Thomas Taylor, before Matt Petts was bought into action first saving from Matt Brewer and then coming out and smothering the ball when Joe Selby got through on goal.

A goal looked like coming at either end, but it was Alton who took their opportunity when Regan Hitch was taken out in the penalty area and Taylor Watts dispatched the penalty to give Alton the lead.

Alton had a period of pressure and Taylor in the Totton goal saved from Jackson, and then Sanderson had a shot cleared. Totton pressed and Petts saved from Ed Ditchburn, before a flowing move involving Callum Burch and Watts ended with Hitch doubling Alton's lead.

Burch tried a spectacular overhead shot then, Watts had a shot was cleared off the line with the keeper beaten and Sanderson just failed to force home the rebound.

The second half started in controversial fashion when Totton's Joe Selby clearly stamped on Ali Gill, the linesman drew the referees attention who decide just a talking to was the outcome. This decision seemed to push Alton harder and with in minutes Matt Jackson got clear, and sent the keeper the wrong way as he cleverly steered the ball in at his near post. Sanderson immediately made it four when he found himself in acres of space and gave the keeper no chance.

Alton upped the anti as Totton appeared to throw the towel in and if it wasn't for the heroics of Totton keeper Taylor, the score line would have been more emphatic. Watts had a shot saved before Jackson thought he'd scored again as the ball appeared to have crossed the line, but with no goal line technology play continued. Sanderson hit the bar after good work by Muir, before once again Jackson was foiled by the Totton keeper.

Alton weren't to be denied and from Watts's corner Ali Gill's header hit the bar and fell invitingly to Callum Burch whose shot scattered the defenders on the line as he made it five.

Totton's cause wasn't helped when Rich Hayter was sent off for a second yellow card after taking out Burch in full flight. Ali Gill got a touch to Hayes's free kick but again the keeper saved. and so the game ended with a much improved performance.

Alton now have two away games and travel to Ringwood on the final Saturday of the season next week.
