The End of the Season 10 Years Ago

Posted: 12.04.17

As we approach the end of another long season I thought it would nice to turn back the clock, and wander through the archives. So ten years ago on 28th April 2007 Alton Towns season was coming to an end with a home game against Brading in the Wessex League Division One (Now the Premier Division). The game played at the Bass Ground resulted in a 5-1 victory; goals that day were scored by Nathanial Sherbourne (3), Ian Humble and Mark Corbett. Another interesting fact was the team were under the management of one Clive Ventham.

We were represented on that day by Nathan Sayers, Sean Burton, Lee Tigwell, Daniel Vincent, Steve Brown, Deryk Hockley, Lee Marker, Ian Humble, Matt Raynor, Nathaniel Sherbourne and Mark Corbett. The subs were Tom Brown, Oliver Robinson and Clive Ventham.

We finished 17th of 20 teams thus avoiding relegation. We played 38 league matches winning 9, drawing 7 and losing the other 22. We scored 59 goals and conceded 87, amassing 33 points. Leading goal scorers were Nathaniel Sherbourne with 30 from 38 games, Richard Mealey with 8 from 21 and Mark Corbett with 8 from 38. The biggest league victory was against Ringwood Town when goals from Richard Mealey (2), Nathaniel Sherbourne, Ian Dyer, Steve Brown and Mark Corbett gave us a 6-0 victory. Our biggest defeat came at Poole Town who put 8 past us with a solitary reply by Nathaniel Sherbourne for our troubles.

Manager Clive Ventham managed to play 10 games that season.
