New Milton Town 0 - 1 Alton

Posted: 25.03.17

Alton put in a hard working performance at a very windy New Milton on Saturday to win by on goal to nil, and in doing so kept a clean sheet for the first time in eight games.

New Milton with the strong wind at their backs started brightly and forced Matt Petts into an early save. The bumpy pitch and swirling wind was making any chance of good football difficult.

Gradually Alton got in to gear and from a quick Sean Hayes free kick, Matt Clarke shot just wide. Alton were trying to get the ball out wide and from one of Callum Burch's trade mark runs and pull backs Matt Jackson forced the keeper into a save. The ball was spending an awful lot of time in the air and both midfields were being by passed, Micky Finch for Milton cut in but shot wide, before a Alton were guilty of standing and watching as Sean Hayes free kick was headed goal wards by Scott Sanderson, and with Burgess in goal beaten it just needed a touch, but unfortunately as defender got back to clear with the Alton forwards admiring Sanderson's header.

The half ended with Petts having to tip over a shot from Kyle Leach as Milton ended the half on top.

Alton were forced into a change at half time when the injured Sanderson (apparently he chewed through his gum shield) was replaced by Adam Westwood, this move would ultimately win the game for Alton as Callum Burch was moved in to a more central striking role.

The goal came on 51 minutes, Taylor Watts got down the wing, his pass found Matt Jackson whose cross was inch perfect to allow Burch to take a touch before firing home giving Burgess no chance. Alton were now getting on top and Watts fired wide, and a Sean Hayes cross just fell in front of an on rushing Burch.

Milton sensing an opportunity to get back into the game threw men forward and lumped the ball forward more and more in the hope of getting knock downs and this eventually was their undoing as they appeared to be getting in each others way, in fact their most influential forward Steve Flynn was forced further and further back.

Alton defended well and a specials mention to center back pairing Phil Moore and Mark Taylor who won nearly every header, and when they didn't one was sweeping behind the other.

Alton threatened to catch Milton on the break as both wingers Westwood and Taylor were giving their defenders a hard time and substitute Regan Hitch shot over from a Westwood cross, when it looked easier to score.

The game ended with a Milton free kick with Rob Way clearing over his own bar. And so a hard fought victory and clean sheet for Alton. They now look forward to a week off, with no game this Saturday, next up is a trip to champions elect Hamble Club on Saturday 8th April.
