AFC Stoneham 5 - 3 Alton

Posted: 06.03.17

Manager Clive Ventham asked for a response to last weeks defeat, and he got that with much improved effort and commitment, unfortunately it was only for about 70 minutes as Alton somehow managed to turn a two nil lead into a defeat.

Alton started brightly and in less than five minutes Sean Hayes gave Alton the lead when he picked up a pass from Adam Westwood and shot home from 30 yards giving the keeper no chance.

On a very boggie pitch it was difficult for either side to play good football. Stoneham attacked with numbers but where unable to threaten the Alton goal.

After a couple of shots going wide Matt Jackson raced through the Stoneham defence to double Alton's lead. Alton looked like they could score at will and created a few chances, but all of a sudden and against the run of play Stoneham pulled a goal back when Ashley Ledger found himself in acres of space to give Petts no chance. This goal gave Stoneham hope and the game became stretched, Regan Hitch had a shot cleared off the line and Phil Moore had a shot saved.

Matt Petts in the Alton goal had to be alert to save form Mason. Alton came out after the break and continued where they left off, after Watts was bought down Hitch saw his free kick tipped over the bar, debutant Elliot Tricker the turned his ma, but Jackson was unable to convert his cross. It was a miss that was to prove costly as from a corner Matt Parmer headed Stoneham level.

Petts had to get down and save another Mason shot, before Jackson got on the end of Tricker's knock down to restore Alton's lead. Alton were enjoying a period of dominance and Phil Moore had a header saved and Watts shot wide, before a needlessly given away free kick turned the match in Stoneham's favour.

Hitch was guilty of a silly push wide out on the left touch line and from the resultant free kick Gharibian had a free header to draw the scores level at three each. This goal drew the stuffing out of Alton and passes started to go astray and tackles were missed. Stoneham's Olly Fraser was allowed to run through the middle of Alton's defence before sliding the ball under Petts to put Stoneham in front for the first time.

With five minutes left Alton's fate was sealed when Moore gave away a penalty and Palmer accepted the offer to increase Stoneham's lead and put the match out of Alton's reach.

Manager Clive Ventham said, 'we played well for 70minutes and really should have been out of sight by the time Stoneham got their first goal. We need to be more clinical in front of goal, when one of the officials comes up to you after the game and asks how did you lose that you know something has gone badly wrong'.

Alton now have a week off, before they entertain US Portsmouth on Saturday 18th March.
