Alton 3 - 0 Downton

Posted: 30.01.17

Alton put in a much better performance on Saturday and were rewarded with the three points against a very good Downton team, that for all their effort didn't really threaten the Alton goal.

Downton started brightly and were putting the Alton defence under pressure from the start. But although missing the suspended Adam Aimable, Ali Gill and Mark Taylor were marshalling the defence really well.

Downton were missing out the midfield and using the long ball, but although they were finding space did not exploit their dominance.

Taylor Watts put in a few good crosses, before really against the run of play Alton took the lead with their first real shot on target. Regan Hitch picked the ball up in the midfield and his 30 yard shot found the back of the net with Aldridge in the Downton goal floundering badly. This goal seemed to give Alton belief and spur them forward, a Burch cross was cleared from a corner and from the resultant corner Ali Gill's header was saved and then scrambled away to safety.

As the half ended Gavin Muir had two chances the first was saved for a corner and then from the corner Aldridge was able to gather at the second attempt.

Two goals in the first fifteen minutes of the second half took the game away from Downton. The first of these from full back Joe Green, would be a contender for goal of the season, as he took a shot from fully thirty five yards out and gave Aldridge no chance as it found the top corner.

Scott Sanderson and Muir were causing the Downton defence all sorts of problems with their sharp movement. Sanderson collected the ball and set Muir away and he went past the full back with ease, who then could only grapple with him in the area and leave the referee with no option but to point to the spot. A very cool and calm Taylor Watts sent the keeper the wrong way to give Alton a three goal lead. Watts was giving his full back allsorts of problems, but Aldridge and the Downton defence stood firm. From one of Watts's runs his shot hit the base of the post with the keeper stranded.

Substitute Jordan Holmes had a shot saved, before fellow sub Ryan Bunney was unceremoniously taken out by the keeper, who can count himself lucky not to be spoken to by the referee. From the resultant free kick Bunney just failed to find the target.

The match ended with Bunney cutting through the Downton defence but as Aldridge came out, he lobbed the keeper, but unfortunalty lobbed the bar as well. This was a much better Alton performance than the previous two weeks and if they can play with the same energy and commitment it will bode well for the remainder of the season.

Next up for the Brewers is an away trip to AFC Stoneham on Saturday 4th Feb.
