Alton 2 - 1 Hythe & Dibden

Posted: 09.01.17

Alton got back on the winning ways on Saturday and proved that they can win ugly and dig in when the need arises.

In all honesty this was not one of the finer games that has been played at The Enclosure and with Hythe's uncompromising style and Alton's inability to get the ball out wide it was never going to be a classic.

Alton back to almost full strength after last weeks disappointment started brightly and forced two early corners that came to nothing. Alton's defence were becoming use to the long high ball played by the Hythe defence to their three man attack, and for the most Adam Aimable and Mark Taylor won most of their headers.

Burch was bought down on the edge of the box and Mitch Parkers free kick was cleared off the line. Alton were not to be denied however and when the ball bounced about in the Hythe box it was Callum Burch who reacted quickest to block a clearance which looped over Hawkins in the Hythe goal to give Alton the lead.

It was a lead that wasn't to last too long and another long high through ball caught Alton's defence napping and Rian Drake gave Kallum Lunn no chance. Alton tried to getting going again, and debutant Gavin Muir shot just wide following a flick by Scott Sanderson, then it was Sanderson's turn when he shot goal wards from a Burch cross only for Hawkins to keep Hythe in it with a point blank save that was then cleared to safety.

Hythe had a chance to go in ahead at the break when an almost identical move for their goal saw Drake clear Lunn but also the bar.

A slight change in positions gave Alton the advantage as the second half started, Muir had a shot saved before Hawkins made a double save to deny first Sanderson and then Watts from restoring Alton's lead. Muir was becoming more influential and from his fine run Mitch Parker restored the lead with a shot from the edge of the area.

Instead of pushing on Alton appeared to think the job was done and allowed Hythe back into the game. Lunn had to be alert twice to deny first Dennett and then Laptas. A double change saw Joe Green and Henry Fox introduced and they appeared to give Alton a bit more energy going forward. Green had two shots blocked and Fox was putting the Hythe back line under a bit more pressure with his presence. Parker put a free kick over the bar before the referee called a halt.

Manager Clive Ventham said 'it was probably the worst Alton had played since he took over in October, but it was good to get the win and dig in when so many players had an off day.

Next up for Alton is a visit from East Cowes Vics on Saturday 14th in the Wessex League Division One.
