US Portsmouth 2 - 2 Alton Res.

Posted: 12.12.16

A last-kick equaliser in the fifth minute of added time was a cruel blow for the Brewers to take against the table toppers, denying them all three points in a fixture which, first team or reserves, has rarely yielded the Brewers even a point over many years.

Alton started slowly against a well-drilled and powerful side and went one down on 21 minutes. In the few weeks that this group has come together, however, they have learned to work hard for each other and they responded quickly with an equaliser on 24 minutes when a powerful run from Gavin Muir ended with a through ball to Kieran Lenachan (AKA McGregor) to level the score.

A minute later the same Gavin Muir played the ball into the path of Henry Panther who finished in style. Alton held their own for the remainder of the first half with Gary Clayton holding the ball up well, linking with Olli Graham and Gavin Muir and Kieran 'Robbo' working off each other in midfield.

Alton gathered themselves together for the second half onslaught that they knew was coming - and they weren't disappointed. Resolute defending from front to back almost won the day with keeper Jimmer Kennedy having to be in fine form despite almost being knocked out from one of a number of rather robust challenges that were made in all areas of the park.

To a man the Brewers were exhausted from their individual and collective efforts with both 'Shearer' and Dan Goodall making a welcome Alton return from the bench late on for Aaron Bunney and a limping Gary Clayton.

'Because the equaliser came so late it felt like a defeat' said manager Clayton 'but, upon reflection, it was a terrific performance from each and every Alton player and a great point won at such a difficult place against an excellent team' he added.
