Romsey Town 4 - 0 Alton

Posted: 24.09.18

Once again Alton suffered an away defeat and again not helped by player availability, this result sees Alton slump to seventeenth in the league.

Both sides had early chances before Alton's defence was caught out by a ball down the right wing, the ball was played to the edge of the box and Magee laid the ball into the path of Jack Odam whose shot into the corner gave Petts no chance.

Max Smith shot over for Alton before Petts was called into action to tip over. Reece Colbourne got clear down the Romsey right and his cross was cleared for a corner, unfortunately for Alton the corner was cleared. Petts was called into action twice more before a Corbett corner was headed wide by Ben Williams.

Alton thought they had equalised following fine work by Corbett, Matt Bunyan ran onto the ball rounded the keeper and put the ball into the net, everyone was surprised to see the linesman flag for offside.

Romsey doubled their lead when a speculative shot from outside the area was deflected past Petts.

Alton had a lifeline at the start of the second half as Bunyan was bundled over in the box, however Philpott guessed right and saved the resulting penalty. Allaway had a shot blocked before both Bunyan and Corbett went close with headers.

Romsey increased their lead with a move down the wing and the resulting cross was turned in.

Alton never gave up and Corbett released Smith but his shot was saved. An Alton corner was headed over, before Steve Black just failed to control another Corbett through ball. Ben Williams almost reduced the deficit when first his shot was blocked for a corner and then he shot wide from the resultant corner.

Romsey completed the scoring when another ball down the wing was pulled back for Odam to score again.

Alton will now look to dust themselves down as they travel to Whitchurch United on Friday night.

The Reserves beat US Portsmouth by 7 goals to 2, Max Williams with four led the way, other goals from Oli Meaker, Chris Horton and Jack Fowler for Alton. Goal keeper Jordi Wilson saved a penalty.
