AFC Stoneham 5 - 1 Alton

Posted: 12.02.18

In atrocious conditions Alton travelled to Stoneham on Saturday, and returned rather humiliated on the wrong end of a five one drubbing.

With rain falling and a gale blowing from one end throughout Stoneham adapted to the conditions far better. With the wind at their backs Alton started brightly and the returning Jack Chandler crossed, but Williams in the Stoneham goal collected. Then Matt Graham cross just evaded Callum Burch.

Gradually Stoneham got into the game and a cross was somehow missed at the far post by Welch with the goal at his mercy and Alton's back row all at sea. Danny Knee had a chance when set up buy Burch but his attempt flew wide. Petts was called into action to save from Welch again, before Stoneham took the lead, Brady got away and into the box, Petts parried his shot but unfortunalty for Alton Welch reacted quickest to score the opening goal.

With the wind at his back it was Matt Petts who almost equalised for Alton as his long clearing kick bounced and skidded off the wet surface causing hos opposite number to dive full length to save. From the resultant corner Ben Williams headed wide.

Alton were beginning to get on top Danny Knee won a corner that was cleared, and then Matt Jackson headed wide when well placed. Welch shot wide for Stoneham before Alton equalised. A goal kick from Stoneham held up in the wind and Jackson intercepted and headed the ball into Knee's path and he bore down on goal before giving the keeper no chance. Mall Petts was crudely fouled by Cabellero as he collected a through ball and on another day would have resulted in a card.

Just as the half ended Stoneham regained the lead when slack defending following a free kick allowed Will Harris to score.

As far as Alton were concerned the second half was a bit of a non event, kicking into the strong wind they didn't create any clear cut chances and as the conditions and pitch worsened some of the players didn't adapt their game and indeed were guilty of going missing.

Stoneham used the wind to their advantage, Clay headed over, Harris shot wide, Alton's Mark Taylor made a fine last ditch tackle on Cabellero, before Chandler back tracked with Clay to thwart another attack. On a rare saunter forward Alton won a free kick and Jackson headed over. Matt Graham got down the left and his cross was collected by the keeper with Alton's front players all guilty of standing and watching.

It was no surprise when Stoneham increased their lead although in rather controversial circumstances as Brady appeared to be offside before he gave Petts no chance. Alton's heads dropped and when Graham miscued his clearance Welch was on hand to score number four. Petts was forced to save before with the ball getting stuck in the mud on the edge of Alton's area it was Mogan who reacted quickest to complete the scoring. Fortunately the referee put Alton out of their misery shortly after and they traipsed off a well beaten side.

They now have two tough games coming up as they travel to Christchurch on Wednesday who have lost league one game all season before having the weekend off and then entertain table topping Laverstock and Ford on Saturday 24th February, manager Mark Corbett will be looking for a reaction to this disappointing performance.

Subs M.Paddon, M.Corbett [both used]
