Weymouth Reserves 1 - 1 Alton

Posted: 18.04.17

Alton made the long trip to Weymouth on Easter Monday, with very much a scratch side and came away with a creditable draw through Ryan Bunney's late equaliser.

With only five of Saturdays first team squad available it was always going to be a tough ask, but Alton dug in and were well worth their share of the spoils.

It was no surprise that Weymouth started stronger and got the ball forward quickly, and it took a Matt Petts save from Carter to keep the scores blank. Gradually Alton found their feet and Ryan Bunney just failed to collect a Sean Hayes through ball, before Mark Taylor headed wide.

The half ended with Weymouth's Conor Jevon having a shot saved by Petts.

The second half started as the first ended with Weymouth using the height and muscle of Luke Pidgely as they looked to get the ball forward quickly, although for Alton the ever youthful Clive Ventham got clear on goal only to be given offside.

The game started to open up and chances fell to both sides and Petts saved from Baker, before Jevon shot over when well placed.

It wasn't all one way traffic and Alton forced a corner which was somehow scrambled clear.

Weymouth took the lead in somewhat fortuitous circumstances when the referee deemed that Joe Green had handled the ball when he blocked a shot from about a yard away and with his arms by his side. Pidgely sent Petts the wrong way. The injustice galvanised Alton and they pressed hard for the equaliser, as the referee seemed to lose the plot slightly and in a game played in a good spirit decided they way to make up for his error was to brandish yellow cards like they were going out of fashion as two players from both sides were cautioned in quick succession.

It looked as though it wasn't to be Alton's day until Gavin Muir who was pushed up front for the last few minutes crossed from the left and Ryan Bunney headed home the equaliser in added time, for a fully deserved point.

Special mention must be made of Gavin Muir and the young Clive Ventham. With only one recognised centre back available Muir volunteered to play at the back and gave a man of the match performance sweeping up behind Mark Taylor and Ventham at 49 played the whole 90 minutes.

And so a happy Alton team returned with a well earned point. Alton go to Ringwood on Saturday for the last game of the season knowing a win will lift them into the top half of the table.
